This Library is not just for bookworms…
Socrates laid it so wisely when he had said, “The best flavoring for a drink is thirst.” This constant void, this yearning for a pattern and ways of life is probably what has propelled The Library’s metamorphosis from being an almost nondescript hole –in-the-wall along Adriatico in Manila to becoming a fundamental, almost iconic force in the thriving live comedy entertainment industry.
On the road to her silver jubilee, The Library has been a career launch pad for her armada of stand-up comedians and more importantly, a second home to her fiercely loyal patrons. The secret is in the tapestry she weaves-ever so distinct, ever so different. Her walls reverberate with music that appeals to all from opera to Broadway, top 40 to everything electric. Her mahogany panels, overflowing bookshelves and antique decors are complemented by unpretentious furnishings, evoking an old world charm that is both nostalgic and pragmatic.
The Library transcends gender, race and social strata as it is not unusual to see students mingling with artist and young professionals; politicians enjoying drinks with activist; journalists hobnobbing with celebrities; and expatriates going out of their way to adjust their Manila itinerary just to have an experience of this live entertainment retreat. No wonder TIME Magazine Asia, in its 15 April 2002, named The Library as one of the best entertainment venues to check out when visiting the Philippines.
Established 21 June 1986- a paltry two months after the historic EDSA Revolution- The Library stands as a testament to the courage and creative vision of her originator Andrew de Real who, despite the social upheaval describing the era, managed to effect a live comedy phenomenon that has spawned an entire generation of musically rich, inventively resourceful live comedy bars that continue to churn out remarkable entertainment and comic wunderkinds.
Today, The Library continues to expand-both in clout and business magnitude, spreading her wings beyond the four corners of her stage, soaring to heights both unparalleled and uncharted.
The Library… Private. Unique. Different.
