The Library Turns 21

Twenty years ago, Pinoy sense of humor started creeping into a lot of people’s lives when a teeny-weeny type of a watering hole made its niche in one of the busiest streets of Malate, 1779 M. Adriatico St., Manila. That was where Andrew de Real’s The Library was born. It first catered to the upper echelons of the society—artists, designers and fashion models.

But as the years rolled by and people just wanted to share in the fun and laughter and still feeling the warmth of their own home, The Library started to welcome a different kind of entertainment apart from just doing your own thing in the jamming session—the karaoke way of sing-along.

And true enough, people from all walks of life started to appreciate watching and hearing a new breed of entertainers whose job is not just to sing and act as hosts but to deliver their own kind of comic kick.

Those days saw the birth of comedians whose craft we continue to enjoy on TV and the movies like Arnell Ignacio, Allan K., Leonard Obal, Ai-Ai delas Alas, Philip Lazaro, Teri Onor, Vivorah and La Bacci.
The Library celebrated its 21st year with a series of shows that culminated last night with Ara Mina as main attraction.
