The Library: Not Only for the
Bookish Crowd
On Glitzy M. Adriatico in Malate, near Remedios circle is a sing along bar called The Library. A humble building facing Ormidable Café Adriatico, The Library has stood the competition firmly for the last six years in spite of many Entertainment Centres sprouting, very now and then within the vicinity.
With its unique name, it attracts customers easily. It began mere curiosity. And later, it’s everybody’s second home. Customers vary, even foreigners are often seeing in the bar. Andrew De Real, 28, Owner-manager put up the Business in 1986 fresh from college. With his accounting degree and past experiences working in different fast food chains while studying. It was an easy decision for him to venture into something new and yet unpopular.
“I started only half of this place. It was a restaurant at first. After two months in operation, I found out that people were looking for a new form of past time, and that’s how it began. Now, I’ve doubled the area,” Andrew fondly recalls.
True to its name, Books of all subjects and titles fill the shelves that double as props. From classical literature to bestseller novels, from simple mathematics to the most complicated calculus, and even diagrams of human anatomy are available to customers who frequent the place. It’s ranges from classical Broadway tunes to top40 hits. Patrons are mesmerized when house entertainer, May Bayot, a finalist in the Miss Saigon play, flexed her vocal chords accompanied by the original minus-one tape of the same musicale.
The Library “Pirated” a master chef from a note seafood restaurant to whip delightful entrees on its menu book, aptly titled after subjects.
The Bar also concocts exotic drinks that could perk up another bland date. |
